The Gun Rack Records: The Battle of Bunker Hill

  • Joey Upper

The Battle of Bunker Hill is one of the most famous battles of the American Revolution, falling somewhere in the nonexistent “famous battle” rankings among Trenton, Lexington and Concord, and the Siege of Yorktown.

While all of those ultra-famous engagements have their deserved slots in the remembrance of American military history, the Battle of Bunker Hill stands apart.

Not only does it allegedly have one of the great American military mantras, “Wait ’til you see the whites of their eyes” attached to it, but it categorically provesthat a bunch of perceived New England yokels could go toe-to-toe with one of the greatest war machines of history and punch them right in the nose.

No, the Battle of Bunker Hill wasn’t an American victory — there were precious few of those over the course of the war — but it so badly damaged the attacking force of British that any reasonable person was led to the conclusion that this war was neither going to be easy or short.

SDI’s podcast, The Gun Rack, recently recorded an episode covering much of the goings-on of the battle. You can also go back in the show’s archives for an even more detailed recounting of the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
