Graduate Employment Opportunities and Practice Requirements:

Requirements to practice as a gunsmith or in a firearms related industry may vary from state to state and may also have federal requirements. You may check such criteria through the career resources on the SDI web site at www.sdi.edu [formerly: www.sonoranlearning.com]

Graduates who wish to work in the field may need to obtain a federal Firearms License (FFL). This is required if you wish to repair firearms for compensation. If you wish to repair personal firearms, an FFL is not required. If you work for a business that holds an FFL you may not need to individually hold an FFL.

Students who have had criminal convictions may not be eligible to obtain an FFL. The Prohibitions related to a criminal background and obtaining an FFL should be checked thoroughly with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and firearms.

SDI makes no representation, warranty, or guarantee that successful completion of this course of study will permit the learner to obtain federal firearms licensure. Learners, who enroll in an SDI program in a field for which professional practice requires any type of licensure or certification, are solely responsible for determining and complying with state, local, or professional licensure and certification requirements. These learners are also responsible for taking the steps necessary to satisfy those requirements.

Requirements change from time-to-time and it is best to check with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) for the most current criteria. You can obtain this information at: http://www.atf.treas.gov/index.htm

By typing your name below (your signature) you indicate that you have read, understood and accept the terms of this agreement. In signing this agreement, you further acknowledge that your state may have law, regulation or licensure requirements that must be met prior to becoming employed in the field for which you are training. You are not bound by this agreement until it is accepted by a representative of the school. If you are under 18 years of age, please contact the school admissions office for assistance.
