Home Inspection Exam Preparation Program
This course is a preparatory course for the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors [EBPHI] National Exam. Students enroll from a distance and study structured lessons that will assist in preparing for, and taking the national exam. This is also a great program to get an overview of the Home Inspection career field.
The program is tied to several states requirements that a home inspector pass the national exam. For example, Arizona regulation R4-30-101/R4-30-301 requires a non-licensed home inspector seeking to work in the state to pass the exam as one of three criteria to be licensed as a certified home inspector. The course follows ASHI/AZ-ASHI Standards of Practice, which is an industry norm. Other states have similar requirements.

Educational Objective:
The objective of this exam prep course is to provide the opportunity for individuals who are seeking a career as Home Inspectors to obtain a passing score on the national exam; depending upon which state they are seeking licensure. The Sonoran Desert Institute will enroll students on any given day and help them to be academically successful. In sum, the course is designed to assist individuals in achieving a successful grade on the exam. A secondary outcome would also be to achieve certain skill and knowledge sets to become entry-level home inspectors.
Content:
The exam prep course will provide an individual with technical information in Communication and Professional Practice; Exteriors; Roofing; Structure; Insulation; Interiors; Electrical Systems; Gas Furnaces; Oil Furnaces; Hot Water Boilers; Other Aspects of Heating; Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps; and Plumbing. This is provided through text based lessons, PowerPoint instructional study guides and interaction with instructors and staff as necessary. Progress will be measured via two (2) mid-terms and a comprehensive final.
Credits/Clock Hours:
Given that this course is offered nationally for the purpose of studying and sitting for the national exam, there are no credit units assigned. The course is measured at 55-clock hours minimum. We are only extending to prospective enrollees that they will receive a minimum number of study hours – learners will vary in their absorption rate and comprehension of the material based upon their previous background and experience in the field. There will be no classroom training involved. All study activity will occur at a distance from the school. The student may wish to directly observe some of the concepts in the field at locations matched to a student's community.
Exam Prep Course Parameters:
- SDI utilizes its instructional staff to directly support learner activity.
- SDI handles all administrative functions, such as enrollment records, records of payments and or refunds; records of exams and issue a final certificate suitable for framing or to present as evidence of course completion. SDI administers two (2) mid-terms and one comprehensive final assessment exam to determine the “readiness” of a student for the national exam and to identify areas where further remediation may be necessary.
- SDI, working with the adjunct instructors, may employ varied strategies to help study for the exam.
- SDI also provides a CD with all materials necessary for completing the course.
- As a program completion incentive, SDI provides a comprehensive, complementary Question and Answer Guide upon graduation. This is by far an outstanding reference book.
