Home Inspection Apprenticeship

This is the oldest established Home Inspection program in the state of Arizona. We have managed to weather the vagaries of the Real Estate Sales and Construction cycle.

The objective of this apprenticeship program is to provide the opportunity for individuals who are seeking Arizona State certification as Home Inspectors to obtain the required thirty (30) supervised home inspections. There is also a comprehensive mid-term exam at the half-way point to further evaluate the student’s knowledge of systems and standards in the home inspection field.

The Sonoran Desert Institute Apprenticeship Program instructs students through a series supervised inspections that conform to the Arizona Society of Home Inspectors (AZ-ASHI) Standards of Practice and which will meet the minimum requirement for submittal to the Arizona Board of Technical Registration for Certification as a Home Inspector.

Educational Objective/Content:

The “apprenticeship” will provide an individual with the supervised parallel home inspections that conform to the Arizona licensing requirements. SDI will ensures that each adjunct instructor training students in the program is a certified home inspector and that the process and methods utilized, as well as the forms and documents use conform to the necessary information to document this for the state. We assist the student with the completion of the forms and documents necessary to submit the license application.

This program not only helps you learn the on-site inspection process, but permits you to begin to develop your own approach to conducting these necessary reviews for home buyers.

Tuition and Fees:

The total program cost is $3,000. This fee covers all inspections and course materials.

All forms and documents necessary for parallel inspections will be provided. Also, resource and reference materials will also be available for up to 30-days beyond the course for an "instructor help line” for those completing the apprenticeship.

We would also offer a limited “pay as you go” type option that would allow for better budget planning by the apprenticeship participant. Simply register on line, or download and print the enrollment agreement and mail or fax it to our admissions office.

Credits/Clock Hours:

This apprenticeship is offered only in Arizona specifically for the purposes of completing the minimum number of residential home evaluations/inspections. It will take no less than 60 clock hours, however, each inspection will vary. And, because each home inspection will vary in time, due to size and nature of the home and the inspection necessary, credit units have not been assigned. We are only extending to prospective enrollees that they will receive the number of inspections that meet state BTR licensing requirements.

There will be no classroom training involved. All apprenticeship activity will occur in the field at the locations of the parallel inspections. And, all students must take and pass the comprehensive mid-term exam prior to graduation. Grading is “P” for pass or “F” for fail.

Apprenticeship Parameters:

  • SDI utilizes only Arizona licensed “certified” inspectors as instructors to directly supervise this activity on-site.

  • SDI handles all administrative functions, such as enrollment records, records of payments and or refunds; records of inspections and issue a final log report [transcript] suitable to attach to the Arizona application.

  • SDI, working with the adjunct instructors, will utilize varied dwellings that meet the state’s requirements. The on-site inspection locations will be tied to scheduled inspections as part of the Adjunct Instructor’s routine work in the field. It is anticipated that the homes would be as varied as possible in the schedule to provide a range of different structures, systems and configurations. No more than two students will evaluate the same residence.

  • SDI provides all forms that are used for the parallel inspections to ensure that the inspections conform completely to Arizona requirements. These report forms are specifically tailored for hot dry climates and the Southwest United States. [See sample form]

  • Students also have access to resource and reference materials as part of the Course as tools to help in the inspection process as necessary.

Schedule and Apprenticeship Structure:

SDI can structure several options to address the flexibility of both the student and instructor schedules. We have an option that will allow for students throughout the state to come to the greater Phoenix or Tucson areas to complete the apprenticeship. SDI does not offer housing, room or board. However, we will make information regarding such services available to prospective apprenticeship participants upon request.
