Home Inspection Diploma Program Outline
Module 7a – Using the Windows Operating System (Windows XP)
Working with Graphics and Documents
Here, you will learn how to create and edit graphics and documents. You will learn to save graphics in different formats. Using what you’ve learned about graphics and documents, you will learn how to print them.
Using Windows XP Tools
Windows XP contains several tools to help you keep your computer running smoothly. Microsoft regularly updates Windows XP and makes those updates available on the Windows Update Web site. In addition, Windows XP includes tools that help you troubleshoot and fix certain computer problems. It also includes a backup program that you can use to make a copy of your key files and restore them in the event of a major problem. In this lesson, you will learn to use these tools and more!
Adding New Hardware and Working with New Software and Middleware
As new and improved computer hardware becomes available, you will want to know how to install the hardware and get it working under Windows XP. One improvement to the Windows operating system is the ability to “Plug and Play” devices. These devices are “found” by the operating system after installation and the proper device drivers are installed. Also, hardware like DVD and Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices are popular additions to existing computer systems. You will learn how to connect more than one monitor to your computer so that you can have your Web browser open on one monitor and a word processing program open on the other! In this assignment, you will also learn the proper way of installing new software and Windows components and have them start automatically each time you start up your computer. You will learn how to change the default middleware (such as your Internet browser) on your Windows XP computer.
Using Your Computer At Home
In this assignment you will explore ways to make the most of your home computer. You will learn how to play games on your computer or over the Internet. You will learn how to use and personalize Windows Media Player so that you can listen to music from the radio or an audio CD. You will also become familiar with how to personalize your Web browsing experience using the Internet Explorer interface and how to use special media features of IE.
Working With Windows XP
This unit is a “hands on” practical project that you must turn in to your instructor for grading. Students will be graded on completion and completeness of the project.
