Module 6 – Introduction to Windows 98

Windows 98

Introduction to Windows 98
This lesson entails a visual tour of the Windows 98 Desktop, learning about its personal tools, file systems, Active Desktop, and communications systems. The student will become familiar with the Windows 98 interface and learn techniques for exploring the computer and the Desktop, manipulating windows and views, and enabling the Desktop.

More About Windows 98
The student will perform everyday tasks, such as starting a program, creating and editing documents, and saving your work, and other functions. This module will explore shortcuts, ways to find files easily, printing and sending techniques, and scheduling tasks. Also explored in this unit will be Windows 98 accessories: Paint, Calculator, Phone Dialer, HyperTerminal, and multimedia tools.

Personalizing Windows 98
Students will learn how to modify and control basic settings and then go into further detail by customizing the Desktop, Start Menu, and Taskbar. Students will also learn to customize folders.

Windows 98 Filing Systems
This lesson will examine local and network file systems, reviewing file system basics, DOS and Windows 98 file naming conventions, and the Windows Explorer. The Network Neighborhood is explained in detail also.

Internet Explorer and the Active Desktop
Students will learn the ins and outs of surfing the Internet using Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s Web browser that is included with Windows 98. You learn how to search for information on the Web and manage the information that you view in Internet Explorer. You also learn about the Active Desktop, subscriptions, and Web Channels.
