Module 5 - Gun Stocks

Gun Stocks: Selection of Wood and Woodworking Tools
Familiarizes you with the tools used for creating a gunstock and gives tips on which woods work best. Shows how to sharpen woodworking tools and demonstrates basic wood carving techniques.

Gunstocks: Design and Layout
Presents criteria you need to consider when you're determining a gunstock design and layout. Takes you step by step through the process of reading blueprints with drawing symbols, sectional drawings, schedules, and dimensions.

Interletting and Shaping
Covers the ins and outs of cutting barrel channels for and fitting semi finished gunstocks and shows you the tools it takes to get the job done right.

Finishing, Bedding, and Checkering
Introduces you to checkering cutters and power tools. Demonstrates techniques for cutting and recutting existing checkering and using patterns and borders. Compares methods of bedding gunstocks and applying appropriate finishes for good looks and protection.

Sling Swivels, Butt Plates, and Receivers
Shows you how to finish your stocks for ease of use by installing rifle slings and swivels, as well as butt plates, recoil pads, and more.

Repair and Restoration
Teaches you how to make damaged gunstocks like new by repairing gouges, removing dents, fixing split buttstocks or breaks at the grip, and more. Also introduces the art of refinishing gunstocks and discusses tools and materials required.

Gunstock Carving
Having already learned about the different kinds of wood carving tools used by gunsmiths, you now find out how to use them for gunstocks, examining different types of carvings and patterns, inlays, and tools.

Gunstock Checkering Lab Kit
Working on gunstocks is a good place for the beginning gunsmith to start - mainly because you need just a few tools. While your lessons demonstrate a variety of gunstock jobs - from shaping and inletting to installing butt plates and recoil pads - this training kit actually gives you practice developing your talents at gunstock checkering. Working with a stock blank, tools, and template, you will learn to checker and recut worn checkering.
